the early garden

the rear side bed was created completely on a whim. while waiting one afternoon for my girls' father to pick them up, I started digging away at the crab grass that was growing under the play castle and made good headway. we were sick of looking at the large tangle of weeds and straggly grass that grows there every year. we had sprayed the entire area with roundup the week before. after getting all of the weeds pulled out, we starting tilling the soil and it was very nice and black and easy to work. so, when I realized that I had many more plants than I could deal with in other beds, we just started putting the "loners" in here. we amended with a minimum amount of composted cow manure. this area of the yard is totally underwater when we get a lot of rain. we had been thinking about making the area a bog at one time but it's only wet/damp in spring; we didn't want to lose all of that square area to any more wet areas. we have planted all moisture-loving plants in this area since they can deal with being underwater for long periods of time and they suck up the water, helping reduce runoff. | |||||
